2. How to offer practical situations for Ss to practice asking and giving directions.
Teaching methods:
1. Listening-and-choosing activity to help the students go through with the listening materials.
2. Listening-and-answering activity to help the students go through with the dialogue in speaking.
3. Individual or pair work to make every student work in class.
Teaching procedures:
Step 1. Greeting & Lead-in
T: Good afternoon, everybody. What day is it today? The weekend is coming, right? So what do you plan to do during the weekend? What will you do to relax yourselves?
(Ask Ss to express their own opinions.)
Step 2. Warming up
T: So there are a lot of ways to relax ourselves and have fun. And here Iˇll show you an activity and see if you know what it is.
(Show a short video about a roller coaster ride. Then show a short video about a free-fall ride and ask the Ss to guess what it is.)
T: So where do you think we can find these two activities? (amusement park)
Have you ever been to an amusement park? What do you do there?
(Ss express their own experience.)
T: Now letˇs have a look at some other activities.
(Show a picture of bungee jumping and scary movie and ask the Ss if they would like to try them.)
T: So nowadays some people like trying such activities and some do not like. What do you think is the reason? Work in groups of four and discuss the question. Then fill in the form on page 64
(Ss discuss and express their own opinions. The ask some groups to do a report.)
Step 3. Listening
T: So just now we talk about some activities and some of them can be found in amusement park. Then do you know any amusement parks? Do you know which park it is in the picture?
(Show some pictures about Disneyland and talk about the pictures to explain some new words that will appear in the listening exercise.)
T: What can we see in Disneyland? (cartoon characters, castle, sleeping beautyK)
T: So if you have a chance, would you like to go there to have a look? But it is so big that we may not know which parts to visit. So here a friend of mine Ann is talking about her experience. Letˇs just listen and see which parts she has visited.
(Ss listen and choose the places Ann has visited.)
T: And Ann said some of the places were interesting and some were not. Did you pay attention to that? Letˇs listen for the second time. Mark the places with stars.
冘 very interesting (**)
冘 interesting (*)
冘 not very interesting (X)
(Listen for the second time and finish this exercise. Then check the answer with the Ss.)
Step 4. Speaking
T: Since Ann has introduced some places to us, letˇs just go to Disneyland to have a look. But it is too big. How can we get to the places? Ask the way!
T: What will you say to ask the way?
(Get the Ss to go over some expressions of asking directions.)
(Show the map on page 65 and tell the Ss itˇs part of Disneyland.)
T: Now letˇs suppose we are at the restaurant. If we want to go to the roller coaster ride, how can we go there? Listen to the tape and see how to reach the roller coaster.
(Ss listen to the tape and pay attention to the expressions of giving directions. Then help Ss go over the expressions of giving directions. Show some new expressions to them.)
T: Now itˇs time for you to make up similar dialogues. Use the useful expressions and make up dialogues finding the way.
(Several minutes for Ss to practice and then ask some of them to act out.)
T: Now suppose a foreign friend wants to visit our campus but he mistakenly arrived at the campus in Chanjie. Please tell him how to get to our Guangchang campus.
(Show a map on the screen and ask the Ss to work in pairs to make up the dialogue. Some of them will act out later.)
Homework:
Surf the Internet and find some information about World Park, Disneyland, the Ocean Park of Hong Kong and so on. Then write a few sentences about what youˇve got. Make a copy of pictures if possible.
