Listening text:

A doctor is talking to a visitor to Britain about her life in the north of England.

(D - Doctor ; V - Visitor)

V: What do you do for a living?

D: I’m a doctor. I treat people with skin diseases.

V: Are you an expert?

D: Yes. I suppose you could call me that! I don’t do any general medicine. I treat people who have trouble with their skin. I do research into skin cancer, and other things. I go abroad to international conferences where I often have to give a talk. I write articles for magazines, so I have a very busy life.

V: What do you do in your spare time?

D: Spare time? I love paintings. So when I go abroad to conferences I try to visit the art museum there. I enjoy music. I play, but not very much now, and I also sing in a group once a week.

V: What do you do when you’re at home?

D: I enjoy cooking. I have a small garden and I grow flowers. Unfortunately, I don’t have enough room to grow any vegetables. When anything in the house goes wrong, I fix it. At the moment, I’m painting my living room.

V: What do you do at the weekend?

D: Cleaning, shopping and cooking! But if the weather’s fine, I try to get out of town for a walk. My house is very close to the mountains and it’s beautiful taking a walk around there.

V: What made you decide to study medicine?

D: I had a serious disease when I was young. So I spent a lot of time in hospital between the age of six and sixteen. In total, I think I had eight operations on my left leg. So I got to know the inside of hospitals very well, and I became very interested in medicine. I can walk now but I can’t run. If I go for a long walk, I’ll feel very tired the next day.
