Step 1 Revision

Check up the homework exercises (Listening in workbook).

T: Now please skim the passage fast to obtain a general understanding of the whole passage. While reading, divide the whole passage into several parts and find out the main idea of each part.

“make the most of” means “put something to the best possible use”

e.g. He doesn’t do well because he doesn’t make the most of his ability.

4. The British Isles is a group of islands that lies off the west coast of Europe.

“lie off” means “to stay not far from the shore or another ship”

e.g. We could see the ship lying off the harbor.

5. The largest island is called Britain, which is separated from France by the English Channel, which are at one point is only 20 miles wide.

“at one point”

e.g. She is at the point of the death.

“be considered to be” means “be regarded as”

e.g. He is considered to be a weak leader.

“be of great value” means “be very valuable”

Step 4 Post-reading

Read the passage again and try to fill in the blanks. Work in groups.

T: Now let’s listen to the tape. While listening, pay more attention to the correct pronunciation and tone. Then read the text by yourselves and try to fill in the blanks. You can work in groups.

The British Isles

consist of Two large islands: One is called Ireland and the other Britain

weather The climate of the British Isles is mild with a lot of rain.

culture The culture of people has received many influences from the European mainland, such as in English language you can find many French words.

history The United Kingdom has a long history. The first two countries forming the Union were England Wales in 1536. In 1707 Scotland is part of the United Kingdom.

language In modern times, people speak English throughout the British Isles. There are still people speak the older European languages.
