Step One Warming-up (Homework)

1. Students tell something about the given cities in groups.

2. Check the answers in Activity 3

Mumbai: It’s a big city in the west of India. It’s on the coast.

Cape Town: It’s a city in the wsouth of South Afriaca. It’s on the coast.

Rio de Janeiro: It’s a big city in the east of Brazil. It’s on the coast.

Alexandria: It’s a big city in the north of Egypt. It’s on the River Nile.

Los Angeles: It’s a big city in the west of the USA. It’s on the coast.

New York: It’s a big city in the east of the USA. It’s on the coast.

Darwin: It’s a city in the north of the Australia. It’s on the coast.

Melbourne: It’s a big city in the south of Australia. It’s on the coast

Paris: It’s the capital city in the north of France. It’s on the River Seine.

Moscow: It’s the capital city in the west of Russia. It’s on the Moscow River.

Step Two To compare two big important cities (Around the world)

1. Students read the passage and answer questions.

1) Where are Washington D.C and New York? They are on the east coast of the USA.

2) Which city is the capital of the USA? It’s Washington D.C.

3) Which city is bigger, busier and noiser, Washington D.C or New York? New York.

4) Are the buildings in New York shorter than those in Washington D.C? No, they aren’t.

2. Students read it aloud.

3. Detail explanation:

The buildings in New York are taller than the buildings in Washington D.C.

the buildings 可用those代替,当前面为不可数名词或可数名词的单数时,则用that代替同一性质的事物。

e.g. The weather in the south is always hotter than that in the north.

Step Three Grammar learning

1. Ask the students to turn “small, nice, heavy, big” into comparatives

2. Check the answers:

small -- smaller, nice -- nicer, heavy -- heavier, big – bigger

3. Forcus the students’ attention on the four different ways in which they are formed:

1) small – smaller: just add “-er”

2) nice – nicer: add “-r”

3) heavy – heavier: change “y” into “i” and add “-er”

4) big – bigger: double the final letter and add “-er”

4. Explain that these are regular rules which are always true, and that they should look at the structure of the root addjective in order to decide how to write the comparative form.

Step Four To ask and answer questions about the places (Activity 1)

e.g. China / UK ----Is China smaller than the UK?

----No, it isn’t. China is bigger than the UK.

1) Los Angeles / Shanghai ----Is Los Angeles busier than Shanghai?

----No, it isn’t. Shanghai is busier than Los Angeles.

2) New York / Cambridge ----Is New York smaller than Cambridge?

----No, it isn’t. It’s bigger.

3) Hong Kong / London ----Is Hong Kong bigger than London.

----No, it isn’t. It’s smaller.

4) Chang Jiang / River Thames ----Is Chang Jiang longer than the River Thames?

----Yes, it is. It’s longer than the River Thames.

Step Five To translate the sentences into English.

1. 大连在中国的北部,有590万人口。

Dalian is in the north of China and it has a population of 5.9 million people.

2. 上海有多少人口?

What’s the population of Shanghai.

3. 香港有七百万人口,所以上海更大。

Hong Kong has a population of seven million, so it’s bigger than Shanghai.

4. 上海有七百年的历史。

Shanghai is seven hundred years old.

5. 伦敦是英国的首都,有七百万人口。

London is the capital of England with seven million people.

6. 中国以长城闻名于世。

China is famous for the Great Wall .

7. 在英格兰的北部,有一些湖泊和大约1,000米高的山脉。

In the north of England, there are some lakes and about-one-thousand-meter-high mountains.

8. 汕头的天气冬暖夏凉。

It’s never very hot in summer or very cold in winter.

9. 纽约的建筑物比北京的要高一点。

The buildings in New York are a little taller than those in Beijing.

10. 我的家乡在中国的东南沿海地区。

My hometown is on the southeast coast of China.
