撑着油纸伞,独自彷徨在悠长,悠长又寂寥的雨巷,我希望逢着一个丁香一样的,结着愁怨的姑娘。
她是有丁香一样的颜色,丁香一样的芬芳,丁香一样的忧愁,在雨中哀怨,哀怨又彷徨;她彷徨在这寂寥的雨巷,撑着油纸伞,诗人眼中的丁香姑娘,像我一样,像我一样地默默彳亍(chì chù)着,冷漠,凄清,又惆怅。
她静默地走近,走近,又投出,太息(“太”通“叹”,太息就是叹息的意思)一般的眼光。
她飘过像梦一般的,像梦一般的凄婉迷茫。像梦中飘过一枝丁香的,我身旁飘过这女郎;她静默地远了,远了,到了颓圮(pǐ)的篱墙,走尽这雨巷。
在雨的哀曲里,消了她的颜色,散了她的芬芳,消散了,甚至她的太息般的眼光,丁香般的惆怅。
撑着油纸伞,独自彷徨在悠长,悠长又寂寥的雨巷,我希望飘过一个丁香一样的结着愁怨的姑娘。

《雨巷》1927年夏天,写成后差不多一年,作者将它投寄到《小说月报》。当时代理《小说月报》编辑的叶圣陶一看到这首诗就非常喜欢,称它“替新诗的音节开了一个新的纪元”,并送给作者“雨巷诗人”的称号。这一年,作者才22岁。
一首好的抒情诗,应该是艺术美的结晶。它会超越时间和空间的限制而唤起人们审美的感情。然而多年来,《雨巷》和戴望舒的其他一些诗作,却被视为象征派和现代派的无病呻吟而排斥在文学史的视野外;多年以后,人们才像观赏出土文物一样,把这些作品从遗忘的尘土中挖掘出来,又重新看到了它们身上的艺术光辉。
这首诗写得既实又虚,朦胧恍惚。“我”似乎有着满腹的心事,无限的烦忧,但又不愿明说,或者是说不出来。“我”似乎在期待什么、追求什么,而期待和追求的目标又显得那样遥远而渺茫。“她”出现了,这或许是在幻觉中,或者是真的,但“她”的出现是那样地快,逝去也那样地快,一刹那间擦肩而过,消失在前方,“像梦一般的凄婉迷茫”。“我”只有自怨自艾,自悲自叹。诗中的“姑娘”,我们可以认为是实指,是诗人心中期待已久的美丽、高洁而忧郁的姑娘。但我们也可以把这位“姑娘”当做诗人心中朦胧的理想和追求,代表了诗人陷入人生苦闷时,对未来渺茫的憧憬。
本诗巧用象征手法,营造了一种既实又虚,朦胧恍惚的氛围。“我”在雨巷中独自彷徨,似乎有满腹的愁苦,但又不愿说出。
