The terrible college entrance exam is not only a big challenge (挑战) for Chinese high school students, but also a very important exam in the lives of South Korean students.

Although the long, cold winter has already started in South Korea, the annual (一年一度的) national exams have made the atmosphere very heated.

More than 675,000 South Korean high school graduates took the college entrance exam last Wednesday. They usually take exams in Korean, maths, sociology (社会学), history and foreign languages.

Officially there is one college place for every 1. 33 students. But because all the students want to go to the top universities in the country, the competition can reach one place for 10 students. The students want to attend these colleges for both their famous names and better job opportunities.

Because students face fierce competition, they have to study very hard to realize their dreams. Park Seung said he and his classmates often go to school before 7:30 a. m. After school has finished at 6:30 p.m., most of them go to the library to continue their study instead of returning home. Since many libraries in South Korea are open 24 hours a day, they often stay long into the night. Many of the Senior 3 students only sleep for three to four hours a day.

“I feel a lot of pressure, but I have to study very hard in order to make my dream come true. This is my lifetime goal and it will be a turning point in my life which could decide my future,” Park said.

The exam day is a very serious day for the whole of South Korea. Vehicles are not allowed within a 200-metre radius (范围) of all the test sites to make sure the students have quiet surroundings. Tooting (吹奏) of horns is forbidden, even airplanes are ordered to avoid landing and take-off near the test sites during listening comprehension test hours.

Students are told their scores in December before they apply for college. This is followed by face-to-face oral tests. There are public and private universities in South Korea. Many private universities are well-known, but their fees can be 18, 000 yuan each term. This has made a lot of students think again.

The Internet has led to a huge increase in credit-card fraud. Your card information could even be for sale in an illegal website. Websites offering cheap goods and services should be regarded with card. On line, shoppers who enter their credit-card information may never receive the goods they thought they bought. The thieves then go shopping with your card number-or sell the information over the Internet.

Computer hackers have broken down security system and that raises questions about the safety of card-holder information.

Several months ago, 25,000 customers of CD universe, an on-line music retailer (批发商), were not lucky. Their names, addresses and credit-card numbers were posted on a website after the retailer refused to pay US $157,828 to get back the information.

Credit-card firms are now fighting against online fraud. Master-card is working on plans for web-only credit-card, with a lower credit limit. The card could be used only for shopping online. However, there are a few simple steps you can take to keep from being cheated.

Ask about your credit-card firm’s online rules: Under British law, cardholders are responsible for the first US $ 78 of any cheating spending.

And shop only at secure sites: Send your credit-card information only if the website offers advanced secure system.

If the security is in place, a letter will appear in the bottom right-hand comer of your screen. The website address may also start https://-the extra "s" stands for secure. If in doubt, give your credit-card information over the telephone.

Keep your password safe: Most on-line sites require a user name and password before placing an order. Treat your password with care.

With only about 1, 000 pandas left in the world, China is desperately trying to clone the animal and save the endangered species (物种). That’s a move similar to what a Texas A & M University researchers have been undertaking in a project called “Noah’s Ark”.

Noah’s Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos, and DNA of endangered animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen(液体氮). If certain species should become extinct, Dr. Duane Kraemer, a professor in Texas A & M’s College of Veterinary Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future.

It is reported that as many as 2, 000 species of mammals, birds reptiles will become extinct in over 100 years. The panda, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years.

This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by implanting cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. The entire procedure could take from three to five years to complete.

“The nuclear transfer (核子移植) of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available(capable of being used) panda eggs could be a major problem,” Kraemer believes. “They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy (having a baby). It takes a long time and it’s difficult, but this could be a scientific breakthrough if it works.” adds Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A& M, the first-ever attempt at cloning a dog.

“They are trying to do something that’s never been done, and this is very similar to our work in Noah’s Ark. We’re both trying to save animals that face extinction. I certainly appreciate their effort that is very much needed.”

73. The aim of “Noah’s Ark” project is to _______.

A. make efforts to clone the endangered pandas

B. save endangered animals from dying out

C. collect DNA of endangered animals to study

D. transfer the nuclear of one animal to another

74. According to Professor Kraemer, the major problem in cloning pandas would be the lack of _______.

A. available panda eggs B. host animals

C. qualified researchers D. enough money

75. The best title for the passage may be _______.

A. China’s Success in Pandas Cloning

B. The First Cloned Panda in the World

C. Exploring the Possibility to Clone Pandas

In order to support Beijing to hold the 2008 Olympic Games and protect our environment, an activity was organized by the Young League and Student's Union of our school during the week from September 3rd to 8th.

All the students in the senior grades took an active part in it. Some students cleaned the playground, watered the young trees and flowers, and removed weeds. Some students collected waste paper, old books, empty cans, old toys and waste batteries. If not dealt with properly, waste batteries will seriously pollute the environment. They had them sorted and sent them to the recycling center.

The activity is really instructive. Now we all have realized how important protecting the environment is.
